There is no question that the geography of the Subcontinent gives India a very special place in regional affairs – a fact which demands that India go the extra distance in demonstrating sensitivity to its neighbours’ concerns and avoiding actions that smack of hegemony. Relations between India and Nepal are very unique, given the nature of historic ties between the two peoples and the complex interdependence and interpenetration of the two societies on the groundThe mayhem in Nepal must be seen as symptomatic of a deeper malaise in the Subcontinent, of collapsing institutions, the failure of the political classes to govern purposefully, the growing economic gap between the region and the rest of the world, and the inability to find ways to broaden the basis for regional cooperation.
The Current Crisis unfolds a very primitive and basic problem, the Maoists want to rule the country as they are in power , they wanted their own guerrillas(around 19000) and fighters to be included in the Army(Around 93000) ,but the Army who has been fighting against them for the past 10 years considers that to be a threat as they are politically and ideologically biased.
The sacking the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Katwal though the cabinet decision was a minority decision, taken with all the major coalition partners, including the Communist Party- United Marxist Leninist (UML) disagreeing. The main opposition party, the Nepali Congress (NC) and other smaller groups have been consistently opposing the Maoists decision. President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav has asked the Prime Minister to review the decision following which the PM has resigned and the Napalese Congress withdrew support.
There are speculations that Indian Foreign Policy particularly the UPA has led to the toppling of the Kingship and comming of the Maoists. The speculations suggest that the UPA Collation with the Left parties gave access to the Communists to modify the Foreign policy towards Nepal. The situation in Nepal has begun erupting with the maoists getting on to streets lighting hundred of torches ,with the incomplete constitution which is to be prepared by 2011 and the interference of China, who is desperate to strike a peace deal so that the state of Tibet does not take advantage of getting support from Nepal.China remains one of the motivating factor to the Maoists as for the Naxalites in India…read more.
Its time for New Delhi to interfere and save the neighbor from breaking apart as it not only protects our borders and is culturally connected but also a democracy and if our neighbors burn in fire we are not safe from it too.
