India and Common Wealth Games!
This is one of the debatable topics these days and can be expected in any Bschool Group
Discussions. Since the topic can be of the question form, like "Is India Ready
                             for Commonwealth games 2010 ?
" or many other forms ,we can divide this
topic into several sections to understand the topic and know various
                       implications.The Proposed dates for the Games are 3 - 14 October 2010
inclusive of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies

CommonWealth : History
Commonwealth was proposed by the British as early as 1891 to promote and understand
the British Empire and bringing a sense of good will. But the acutal commencement of
games took place in 1930 in Ontario,Canada. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF),
with its headquarters in London, and in last Common Wealth Games 2006 there was
participation from around 7000 athletes & Officials from 53 countries(Total in CWG) in
Melbourne.CGF 's three core values - HUMANITY, EQUALITY and DESTINY for promotion of peace and friendliness. The Venue of commonwealth games is decided by voting(There are criterion that the member country has to meet before it can even "bid" for the commonwealth games to be held on its land) from the participating countries,Delhi got this opportunity by defeating Hamilton(Canada) by 46:22 votes in 2003.After hosting Asian games in 1951, 1982 this will be a very big occasions to host commonwealth games 2010 in Delhi for India .

Benefits
of CommonWealth Games

Lets take a look at 1982 Asiad Games and What Benefits did Delhi got from Hosting it:
•A complete infrastructure of stadiums covering most sports: Nehru Stadium, Talkatora pool, IG Indoor, DLTA...
•The Asiad Village, which now houses the city’s affluent middle-class
•Other events, once the world recognized that India could host a major do. The NAM conference followed the next year, CHOGM a year after that
• The first set of flyovers, marking a revolution in the city’s traffic system
• Colour TV, so everyone can remember the games opening ceremony

We can look forward from CommonWealth Games 2010:
•NEW STADIUMS: The Yamuna Sports Complex will have two arenas, each seating 7,000, for boxing and weightlifting and all the existing stadiums will be upgraded.
•ANOTHER GAMES VILLAGE: Near the Swaminarayan Temple complex in East Delhi, it will house 8,500 athletes and officials and will also eventually be sold to the public
•THE METRO: The best news, if you live across the river: the capital’s newest pride will be extended up to the Games Village to give athletes easy access to the venues
•MORE ROADS,FLYOVERS:Longer wider roads, more flyovers, a mass transit system, better pavements.

Apart from the basic infrastructure related to the hosting of games in the city, there is a complete renovation plan for the city by 2010. The proposals have been approved and the work on those lines has already begun. This includes a complete facelift to the city with new roads, improved transport system, new hotels, flyovers, new power plants, etc. The total budget or an estimated cost of gearing up the city for the major event would be somewhere close to $17.5 billion. Development work is progress in and around Delhi so that the city is complete with the entire necessary infrastructure before the Commonwealth Games 2010.
This would enable Delhi to move 5-10 Years forward in terms of infrastructure and facilities.
Looking at past performance in CommonWealth 2006 where India stood 4th in the overall
ranking, performing in front of the home crowd would all together be a boost to the spirit
of  Incredible India. Moreover there would be hoards of tourists and hotels boosting India's
economy and the tourist industry.

CommonWealth Games :Drawbacks

Too much investment might go to waste as was the case when India hosted the 1982 Asiad,
most of the stadiums built at that time were not properly maintained and that further funds
have to be allocated or their face lift. The biggest risk is that of completing the given tasks
in given time otherwise all the funds invested in it will go to waste.
Repeatedly there has been news about CWF not happy about the progress of work in Delhi for CWG.

There has been some good initiatives by the government agencies but without proper planning which has led to misuse of funds and many other problems.Such as the DDA scheme to catch stray cattle/dogs and hand them over to DDA and earn 2000Rs was a good initiative but subsequently DDA was out of space to keep this stray cattle and out of Funds as well. Moreover the DDA initiative to raise money from the allocation of flats led to the much controversial FLAT scam for which enquiry is still on(The DDA has got a clean chit after transfer of two major enquiry officials from the enquiry). With such schemes and a corrupt governance system it becomes hard for the government to implement its plans successfully .Also there has been a lot of issues like the desired hotel projects would not be completed in time because of funds shortage in the time of recession. The land allotted to the hotel owners at throw away prices, thereby the government had already given a huge subsidy in term of land allocation and other measures. Public,Roads(Traffic) and mass transit not trained on how to follow instructions and rules during commonwealth games etc. Also the funds shortage is partly because of wastage of funds and miscalculations done by the government. Therefore there is a huge risk of government unable to meet the desired objectives in given time.
